NEW TO THE AUTOIMMUNE PROTOCOL?
The world of the Paleo Diet and Lifestyle has come a long way from the early days when there were just a few books floating around by Loren Cordain, Robb Wolf and Mark Sisson. The movement has grown and branched out into various subsets, such as Primal, the Whole 30 and the AIP. All streams build on the same foundation – avoid cereals, grains and legumes, refined sugar and industrial seed oils – and there’s a valid logic to all their minor differences. What makes the Autoimmune Protocol different is that it turns off all the triggers which can potentially fire the immune system into over-reacting.
THE AIP TURNS OFF ALL THE TRIGGERS WHICH POTENTIALLY FIRE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM INTO OVER-REACTING.
The Autoimmune Protocol has a very specific agenda, and is, to be sure, the most challenging program to adhere to. But for many, it proves to be the key which unlocks a gateway to health which the other programs simply haven’t been able to do. The reason for this is that the AIP requires eliminating from the diet all the foods which have the potential to activate the Immune System. The AIP is the detox program which allows your immune system to really slow down, and in many cases, switch off. On top of the standard Paleo foundations, it requires you to eliminate, for a short time, eggs, all dairy, nuts and seeds, all spices deriving from nuts and seeds, nightshades, chocolate and caffeine. It also requires keeping fruit and unrefined sweeteners down to a maximum of 20 grams per day. Re-introductions of these foods are made slowly so that the effects can be monitored.
WHY I ADVOCATE THE AIP
I’d been following the Paleo Diet and Lifestyle for quite some time, and although I experienced dramatic improvements, I was still suffering from painful and frustrating symptoms of chronic inflammation. The AIP really shifted things for me. It was as though my immune system said, ‘Ah! Finally!’ Now, even though we eat Primal, a lot of my home cooking is based on the AIP. If I feel like my inflammation levels are creeping up (which happens especially if I go away for a few days or eat out too often), a short stint on the AIP will quickly bring things back under control.
DIVE IN WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE AIP COMMUNITY
The Autoimmune Protocol is challenging, but, believe me, that doesn’t translate as tasteless food and a miserable time. The opposite is true, especially if you harness the support of the AIP Community.
As well the supportive groups to be found online, the health coaches, the doctors and the nutritionists, there are a group of bloggers who have really seen results through the AIP, and share everything they know.
