Rather than writing a lengthy list of New Year’s Resolutions, Chris Brogan suggests picking just 3 action-inspiring words words that will act as mental triggers and encourage you to take the right steps towards your goals. I like it. I’m going to give it a go and it’d be fun if you joined in. It’s really easy – there are just a few pointers which I’ve outlined below. Scroll down to read my 3 words, and share yours in the comments. Chris has also set up a hashtag, #my3words, so we can hook up with other 3 Word-ers around the globe.
Here’s what you do:
3 Words for the New Year
Choose 3 words that will motivate you to take positive action towards your goals for the next 12 months. Note:
- The words are not your goals, but rather what you need to activate in order to realise your goals. The word might be a little abstract, thus acting as a stimulus in ways other than linear and rational. For example, your goal might be to exercise more, but the word ‘Exercise’ is the goal itself. The word ‘Heat’, on the other hand, might trigger you into thinking about different ways of generating heat in your body, and might then open into how the idea of warmth affects your home, relationships and working habits.
- Choose words that apply to multiple areas of your life. You might want to be more productive in your work this year, but the word ‘Productivity’ is limiting. ‘Create’ might be more suitable, as it can easily shift from the workplace to your hobbies, from your home life to your spirituality.
See how Chris Brogan has chosen his 3 words over the last 10 years. It’ll get you thinking.
Write the 3 words down in places where you’ll see them often: post them, stick them, wallpaper them wherever you want.
Make time each day to think about what those words mean for you.
Why 3 Words?
Chris has been doing this for several years, and says there’s something particular about the choice of three words as opposed to one, two or four. One word seems to be forgotten. Two words seems to set up a binarism, a ‘this’ is better than ‘that’. Four words seems to collapse. But three words has a triangular structure, and just like in geometry and cantations, there’s a certain strength and magic in that.
My 3 Words for 2017
After some deliberation, I’ve settled on the words Spark, Buzz and Light in the hope that they’ll inspire me towards my ultimate goal of productivity. Here’s why I’ve chosen them.
Spark is the flash that ignites ideas, creativity and productivity. It’s the energy of inspiration and motivation, and that goes both ways: it’s about me being awake and open to receive new impetus, and it’s also about my ability to inspire and motivate others. Spark is what I need to Get Things Done. A little Spark will make me open my sewing box when I’m relaxing at home, as well as ignite the motivation and perserverance required for my blogging and yoga projects.
Buzz is about connection, engagement and collaboration. If you’re following me on Social, you’ll know that I have a strong streak of introversion in my character: often, I’m not around. I like being on my own. Silence, meditation, solitary walks with the mini schnauzer, these are what I like. But they’re not great for Getting Things Done. Productivity is easier when you’re amidst like-minded, energised, positive people. Buzz is about honey bees working together as a community to produce something sweet. It’s about communicating, which is a balance between listening and partaking. Buzz is about being with others, being useful, and doing my best for my community.
Light is about illumination and information. It’s about seeking knowledge, and sharing that knowledge: shining the light, whenever and however it’s possible. Light is about spirit, about distinguishing as best I can between true and false, between power and force, between light and dark. It’s about goodness. Light is also about being light-hearted, about not being hard on myself or on others, about loving kindness and compassion. It’s about laughter and having a sense of humour.
So, I’m sticking with these words. I’ll write them into my 2107 purple Moleskein diary, tape them to the dashboard in my car and post them onto the bathroom cabinet. I’ll reflect on them every day as I’m out with Roxy, and I’m curious to see how they’ll affect the pattern of the year ahead.
