What’s Chronic Cardio? And Why You Should Avoid It.

Chronic Cardio is a pattern of frequent, sustained workouts of medium-to-difficult intensity with insufficient rest between sessions. The repetition and intensity puts the body/mind into a state of extreme stress. The stress results in the release of cortisol, and causes the body to crave carbohydrates and store fat.

Chronic Cardio is a pattern of frequent, sustained workouts of medium-to-difficult intensity with insufficient rest between sessions. The repetition and intensity puts the body/mind into a state of extreme stress. The stress activates the fight-or-flight mechanism, resulting in the release of cortisol and causing the body to crave carbohydrates. In order to recover from the immediate trauma and be prepared for tomorrow’s onslaught, hormonal changes switch the body into "fat storage" mode. Chronic Cardio, it can safely be said, ain’t pretty. What's Chronic Cardio? And Why Should I Avoid It? Putting it simply, Chronic Cardio has 3 determining factors. The physical workouts areFrequent and sustained Of medium to difficult intensity, and With insufficient rest between sessions. So, we’re not talking here about your heart pumping as you make your way up that steep mountain track on the chance Sunday when the sun happens to be shining. That sort of situation happens, maybe, once a month. Whilst the climb might take 45 minutes and require a sustained effort, there isn’t a pattern of frequency, which means your body has a chance to rest and fully recuperate afterwards. But if you do that three or four times a week then, yes, it becomes a case of Chronic Cardio. Too often means that the body never has a chance to fully recover: it remains in a constant state of stress. How hard your heart pumps during your workouts is relevant. It determines whether your body is working aerobically or anaerobically. This impacts on whether you’re burning fat or sugar for fuel. Strangely enough, how hard your heart should pump to keep your workout healthy depends not on your level of fitness, but on your age. 75% of the Maximum Heart Rate, or 180-minus-your age The cut-off point to achieve optimal benefits from an aerobic workout without triggering the fight-or-flight stress mechanism is 75% of the Maximum Heart Rate, or 180-minus-your age. You know those days when you feel like you haven't eaten enough, and you're not quite sure how to fill the cavernous gap with wholesome food. Yes, you've had bacon and eggs for breakfast. Yes, you've had a  handful of olives as an appetizer before lunch, and you've cooked your fish in coconut milk - it's not like you're avoiding healthy fats. But your metabolism is telling you you've got to up the score. You want to eat the world. Right. Now.Enter Paleo Fruit and Nut Muesli. No cooking, no cleaning up, none of that long, slow baking of granola. Just throw all the ingredients into a bowl. Use coconut chips and coarsely shredded coconut as the base, and then go crazy with the add-ons. Crushed walnuts and hazelnuts are good, and/or almonds and macadamias. I always have finely chopped dried figs and dates in my mix, along with a sprinkling of currants. Dried mulberries and apple are also good. Toss in some pumpkin and sunflower seeds.Essentially, you want a good dose of fat.  The coconut, seeds and nuts, will provide that, along with a little protein. Don't go overboard with the dried fruit. While they're certainly a concentrated source of micronutrients, they can also be a sugar bomb. So just add a little, but not enough to send the Sugar Dragon our of control. We use Paleo Fruit and Nut Muesli as an added sprinkle. We're not sitting down to a bowlful: it's not a nostalgic replacement for those old cornflake guzzling days. We eat our full meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner - and the Muesli is a tasty little bonus, and a ...

Muscovado Sugar isn't just empty calories. It's dark brown, coarse and moist, and still retains many of the nutrients of raw cane sugar. Muscovado is still sugar, and for that reason don't go swilling it down. But when you need just a little sweetness in your Paleo baked goods, then I'd say Muscovado is a valid option.

PALEOMANTIC

Hi there, I'm Angie.

My man, Fiorenzo, and I plunged into Paleo in September 2014. It wasn't easy - I'd been vegetarian for several years, so the animal protein component of Paleo was challenging. But we had nothing to lose. Our various health issues were chronic and debilitating. We'd tried everything, with no answers. Paleo was amazing. After just 12 days Fiorenzo renounced the pharmaceutical he'd been taking for 4 and a 1/2 years, and lost 35 pounds. My inflammation has decreased to the point where I no longer need painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

We live in Northern Italy. He plays trumpet. I teach yoga and meditation. We're passionately Paleo and a little romantic, thus: Paleomantic.

My goal is to help you on your road to health and happiness through sharing all I know about the Paleo Diet and Lifestyle. Welcome! Read More…
